What the Duck!?

So a while back I headed over to Ruffey Lake near Doncaster to have a walk around. It was a hot day and there wasn't much to see except Coots, Dusky Moorhens and Pacific Black Ducks keeping cool in the lake.

Then I noticed that one duck was not like all the others...

It's face markings and brown feathering was that of a Pacific Black Duck. But it also had a yellow bill and orange feet just like a Mallard. The white feathers and large size makes me think that someones (ex) pet duck had a little fling with one of the Pacific Black Duck ladies at the lake a while back and produced this interesting creature.

See below for a good size comparison between the tiny Pacific Black Duck in the foreground and the monster duck at the back.

I came across some info that talked about how the hybridisation with domestic ducks are threatening the Pacific Black Ducks in Australia.

Nearly all domesticated ducks (I'm picturing big white ducks with yellow bills) are descendants of Mallards (pretty green heads and yellow bills). The Mallard was introduced to Australia in the mid 1800's and has since rapidly expanded in numbers thanks to it's high adaptability within urban settings.

It's not only the Pacific Black Ducks that are being interfered with, there's a long list of ducks around the world that are getting their gene pools mixed by these dirty Mallards.

Anyway I could be completely wrong that this duck is a PBD x Mallard mix and instead is some exotic duck that I just can't seem find in my bird book!

Feel free to leave comments if you have any other ideas.
