Sad day for the Mistletoebird chicks

A week ago I went to check on the Mistletoebird chicks and was saddened to see that they had both perished. Given that their nest was in a very exposed position in a small tree I think the heat might have got them.

Warning: There is a photo of the perished babies below.

This is the tree they built their nest in. You can just see a ball of the hanging nest at the end of the arrow.

On a brighter note I found a pair of Fantails feeding 2 young babies in a nest alongside the main Yarra bike path. They had picked a nice shady spot for their nest.

Grey Fantail, Rhipidura albiscapa

It was a hot day and there were a lot of birds down by the river or perching with their wings slightly open to cool off.

Red-rumped Parrot, Psephotous haematonotus

White-faced Heron (immature), Egretta novaehollandiae

Red Wattlebird, Anthochaera carunculata
I'll keep an eye on the Fantail babies and hopefully have some happy updates to share.
